LUCILLE ROSENBERG Lucille Rosenberg died on Sunday night, April 1, in Elm Terrace Garden, surrounded by loving family. She died peacefully and without fear or pain. Lucille Fagan was born on August 28, 1922, born and raised in Brooklyn NY, to her mother, Dorothy Smith Fagan, and her father, Ben Fagan. Ben Fagan came over from Russia as a teenage orphan, traveling by boat with his sister. He became a butcher, and a grand master at bridge. Dorothy was born in the US, and raised in urban poverty. She loved beautiful things, and family. Lucille's older sister, Sylvia married Lew Kates and later became a well known character actress (Madlyn Kates) perhaps best remembered for her famous "doity boids" role as the concierge in the original movie version of "The Producers." As a young woman, Lucille was a terrific basketball player. She loved books and reading and began working in publishing. She never finished college but took college courses at NYU and the New School. At age 28 she met and married Ross G Rosenberg. Ross Rosenberg was a WW2 veteran, a trained chemical engineer and successful businessman. Together they bought a house in Syosset. They traveled extensively, all over the world, from China to Africa to Europe to New Zealand. They loved theater, the arts, great food, bridge, wit, lively conversation, and their two daughters. Lucille was an unusual woman for her day and age. She always spoke her mind. She was courageous, generous, sharp-witted, funny, artistic, stylish, a defender of the underdog, and she believed that women should have independent lives and incomes. She was a great believer in education. She was fierce and tender. She made an impact on others-she was unforgettable. She is survived by two daughters, Ellen Rosenberg-Caserta and Liz Rosenberg; a son-in-law David Bosnick; four grandchildren: Vanessa Johnson, Adam Johnson, Eli Bosnick and Lily Bosnick; nieces and nephews: Mal Kates, Kathryn Kates, John Kates and his wife Sue Ann and son Ben.
