Obituary of Carol A Corson
Carol Anne Corson, beloved educator and author, died on Tuesday, March 29th. Carol was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania in 1939, and raised in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. She was 82 years old.
A lifelong reader, and an advocate for children, Carol grew up in Journey's End, a home adjacent to Plymouth Meeting Friends School (“PMFS”) that later became the kindergarten building for the K-6th grade school.
Carol attended PMFS, as did many generations of the Corson family. She graduated 6th grade in 1951, and went on to attend high school at Germantown Friends School, graduating in 1957. She completed her education at Earlham College (where she majored in English and minored in Theater), and Temple University, where she earned an Ed.M. in the Psychology of Reading.
Carol channeled her love of books and theater into a long and productive career as an elementary school teacher. She taught at Plymouth Meeting Friends School (“PMFS”) and Germantown Friends School for more than 40 years combined. Cherished by students, parents, and faculty, Carol was known for being able to connect with students by building on their strengths, identifyingand cultivating their interests, and adapting her methods to suit each child, particularly while teaching reading.
Carol maintained an interest in books and teaching throughout her life - amassing a library of books that she would freely lend to friends, family and students. After her retirement from teaching, Carol served on the PMFS School Committee for many years and also volunteered at the PMFS Library and Friends Free Library. She was an expert on antique toys, and in particular, dolls designed and created by Albert Schoenhut and the A. Schoenhut Company, who produced dolls and childrens’ toys in the late 19th and early 20th century. Carol traveled, and lectured extensively on the topic, particularly as she was developing material for her book, Schoenhut Dolls, a Collector’s Encyclopedia.
Carol is survived by her sisters Katherine Krause and Linda Corson, her brother John E. F. Corson, and many nieces and nephews. Carol was a long time member of Plymouth Monthly Meeting. We will celebrate Carol’s life in a memorial service at the Plymouth Meeting Friends Meeting House located at 2150 Butler Pike, Plymouth Meeting, PA, on May 14, 2022 at 10 AM.
