We are shocked to find Dr. Canning has died. We are Rob and Debbie Lundin. We were stationed in Riverside, Ca in 1990. We were referred to the Naval Hospital for my husband. While there, I asked if anyone could look at my 18 month old son. I had a doctor look at his undescended testicles, but I wasn't comfortable with their answer. I was told one of the best pediatric urologists was working and he would take a few minutes to see us. Dr. Canning said we were given the wrong diagnosis. Our son's testicles had gone into his thighs. We scheduled surgery. Dr. Canning performed the surgery. All went well. I never forgot his name and I carried his card in my wallet for over 25 years. I am looking him up to let him know our son Robert and wife just had a healthy baby girl. Your husband would have a hard time remembering us. But, he might have remembered I made lunch for him. I brought bbq ribs and apple pie to his office.
We are so sorry for your family's loss. The world lost a great healer. He is remembered with grateful hearts.

I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Dr. Canning from the Navy, which was the beginning of his career, at Bethesda Naval in the 80's. He always strived to be the best in whatever he did and it showed until the end. I also worked with him at Balboa Naval.
Dr. Canning even got me an interview at CHOP in the 90's to come work with him again. He wanted to help me in my time of need trying to move back to Pennsylvania.. Unfortunately that did not happened. I just recently found out about his passing while working in the OR in Pittsburg, working Urology once again.
So many stories to tell from being an Medical student/interen to staff surgeon. I will always remember the love he had for his family and the care he had for his patients. He put his heart and soul into everything he did. Rest in peace Doug.

I just learned of this terribly upsetting news. Peace, love and light to Mrs. Douglas and the family during this time of grief. Dr. Canning was my daughters Urologist when we moved from RI to PA. Such a beautiful soul as a skilled Physician but as a person. I was shocked to learn tonight of his passing and I know my daughter will be affected greatly. I am so sorry…….. “ thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared”. Buddha. That is the mark Dr. Canning left in this earthly world, so many candles are lit!

To Dr. Canning’s family:
I am so very sorry for your loss.
We found Dr. Canning six years ago, and last year he performed a life-changing surgery on our son. He was always so kind and gentle and caring, going out of his way to sit beside me and explain every aspect of the procedure, no matter how many times I asked the same questions. He connected with our son, speaking directly to him, sharing fishing stories, and never leaving the room until he was sure our child’s questions had also been answered.
At our last office visit, when we learned our son would need an additional surgery, I asked Dr. Canning to promise me he would not retire before this fall so we could rest assured he would be doing the second procedure. We had a good laugh, and I left with some comfort.
My heart is broken for your family to have lost such a husband, father, and friend…he spoke often and lovingly of you all so casually and naturally because you were his life. My heart is also broken that the world has lost such a skilled and consummate professional, for all the children and their parents who will not ever be under his care. And my heart is broken because there is no way to choose another doctor after having been on the receiving end of Dr. Canning’s expert and loving care.
God bless you all, may you find comfort in your memories and the love you share.

My son had 19 operations in 16 years .He had hypospadias to the 3rd degree and a Dr. in N. J. transplanted an urethra in him at 9 months old. It stayed good until he was 5 years old which is when he got the disease BXO which destroyed his urethra .The Dr. in N.J. tried to fix the urethra by getting out the white scar tissue that BXO cerates. After a few more operation he said to go to CHOPS in Pennsylvania. He recommended a Doctor who operated on my son and screwed him up. he later lost a case for 18 million dollars for another screw up. I wanted to sue but then I met Dr. Douglas Canning who I told my complaints about the other Doctor. he asked me to trust him and the vibes I got from him was that this was a good and honest man. We discussed my sons case and first he had to undo what the other Doctor screwed up. Like I said my son had hypospadias to the 3rd degree with chordee and now a disease called BXO. Dr. Canning said that this is one of the worst cases he ever saw but he assured me that he could fix it .My son was operated on every summer starting from when he was 5 to the age of 17.He had 19 operations from 3 different Doctors over this time .Dr. Canning told me that my son's last operation would be around when he was 21.
Dr. Canning was amazing, he made a plan and eradicated The BXO and did a transplant of cheek and lip membrane to form a new urethra at the age of 17. my son is doing great, no problems. Dr. canning was the best and if every man in the world was like him the world would have no problems. he was the best Doctor. My son and I cried when we heard the news He really cared about everyone. .Marcus L Kirschenbaum and son.

There are just some people in this world who you always remember because of thier kindness and humility. I had not worked with Dr. Canning in over 10 years since my leaving CHOP but I will always rememer his smile and how personable he was with everyone. A light was snuffed out when he left this world.

My deepest condolences and prayers are especially with his family, but also his friends and colleagues.
Dr. Canning was a wonderful doctor and friend to me and I can never thank him enough for all he helped me through the last 27+ years. God placed him in my life at just the right time and he was a huge support in not only my health and wellbeing, but also a big supporter in my endeavours in life as a musician and throughout college. I will forever be grateful. And I will forever cherish this photo. May the Lord continue to grant you peace and comfort during this time. Wish I had found this website sooner.

Our daughter was hospitalized over 14 years ago at a local hospital when she was only 8 months old. They diagnosed a kidney infection and later told us that there was an anomaly with her kidney that could be a cancerous tumor. Our pediatrician immediately sent us to CHOP and that is where we began our 15 year relationship with Dr Canning. She was scheduled for a battery of tests over the next several months but Dr Canning would immediately follow up with the results and his clinical impressions . We always felt relieved that Dr Canning was always there for us with his incredible staff . Once when he was called away for an emergency at the hospital, we were forgotten for a few hours as we waited for Dr Canning in an exam room . The very next morning, he called my wife and spoke with my wife apologizing for the extended delay and said , ultimately, as the chief, it was his responsibility . What a humble man. The truest gentleman scholar . For him to apologize and call us just had us floored . We would see Dr Canning on regular visits and follow ups. Each time he was upbeat, positive and encouraging . His professional manner will never be repeated as he was a one in a million gentleman and physician . We saw him last this past January and he said that we would only need one or two additional visits and that he would finally be discharging our daughter from his care . He said he wanted to see her before she went off to college . He sat with us and we reflected on our 15 year history . He sat with our daughter and even drew her diagrams of her condition and how it changed from 8 months to 15 years . Yes, his smile made you feel that everything would be ok . We never worried with Dr Canning leading our team . My family would like to offer Dr Canning’s wife and children not only our deepest condolences but our humble and gracious gratitude. We thank you for sharing your husband and father so that he could help our little, now teen daughter . He was the best of what people should be and he cared for each patient and parent and caregiver like they were his most important patient . Please know our family will never forget him and we thank God that he was a significant part of our lives . He was a gentleman physician scholar that made a huge, positive impact on this world .

We met Dr. Canning in the elevator headed up to the 9th floor in the Burger Building. After a very unhelpful experience with doctors from another hospital, we sought out CHOP for their world renowned care. We had no idea that the very pleasant and kind Dr we met in the elevator at 8am, would become of son’s doctor.
However, I have a feeling he knew we were headed his way. Our son has a very mild case of bladder extrophy that always fascinated Dr. Canning. Our son is 3.5 and has never had surgery.
From the moment we met Dr. Canning- he was compassionate, kind and thoughtful. As parents, he let us ask every question we had, never rushed us and took his time. We have never met a doctor or surgeon with his traits prior. After being nervous and anxious from a very different hospital experience elsewhere, Dr. Canning reassured us of everything. We always felt calm and cool in his presence.
We always enjoyed his detailed drawings of anatomy to help us better visualize how things were working.
We are deeply saddened at the passing of such an amazing doctor and dedicated family man.
We believe we met Dr. Canning at a very difficult time in our three month old son’s life, we were scared and unsure, but Dr. Canning brought us into the light. Dr. Canning was the doctor we needed but now he has left his department and completely changed our outlook.
Our son is preparing for his first and hopefully only surgery and we know Dr. Canning’s spirt and guidance will be with his skilled colleagues!

He was amazing man ! Dr Canning made me feel like I was apart of his family! My son was born with the hyperspatus dr. Canning explained . Kept an eye on my son every 2 wks . He decided at the age of six months he was going to proceed with the surgery. Well through the years and up until just about 2 yrs ago ( my son is 20 now) He finally thought everything is where it’s suppose to be ! Thank you Dr canning for who you were and most certainly... All you did . For my son and so many others ! May you rest in piece ! To the family . We never met you but know we got to know you ! He was a proud man ! Our deepest condolences and prayers to you all . May all the glorious memories get you through this very difficult time ! God bless you ! Jada and Wayne Hack
