Obituary of Roy B. Mattis

Roy Mattis a/k/a Rick Mattis passed unexpectedly on December 25, 2022.  Rick was survived by his mother, Esther Mattis, his brother Bruce Mattis, his sister-in-law, Liza Mattis, his niece Christina Mattis Shafer, and his great niece Corie Shafer.  His father Roy B Mattis, Jr. predeceased him.

Rick was born in Philadelphia, but followed his heart and relocated to Ocean City, New Jersey, where he lived a simple and happy life.  You may have seen him riding his bike around town, waving to friends along the way!

Rick loved all things sports with a special emphasis on his beloved Philadelphia Flyers.  No doubt he was their number one fan!  He enjoyed baseball and football and spent endless hours determining the perfect picks for his Fantasy Football team.  If you needed a stat, he was your guy!

When you became a friend to Rick, you were a friend for life.  Until his passing, Rick maintained deep and lasting friendships with childhood friends. Not a user of social media, he was the ultimate people person, and connected with friends and family through the lost art of conversation.  When he asked how you were, he really wanted to know and truly cared.  The “king” of long goodbyes always had one more thing or one more person to ask about before disconnecting.  We all wish that his last goodbye was a little bit longer. 

Rick’s celebration of life will be held on May 6, 2023 in Ocean City, New Jersey.
