Obituary of Stewart Hughes
Stewart Hughes passed away peacefully on April 3, 2023 at the age of 79. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 15, 1944 and was one of three children of Robert and Lorinda Hughes.
Stewart is survived by his son Stewart Hughes Jr (husband of Ruthann), brother Derrickson (Derry) Hughes (husband of Pat) sister Lorinda (Lindy) Hughes and son in law Matthew Woolery. Grandchildren Collin and Michael affectionately knew him as “Grandpa” and will always remember the times spent together running the American Flyer model trains and watching Eagles games together. In addition to his parents, Stewart was predeceased by his daughter Sidney Woolery.
Stewart grew up in Mount Airy and Lafayette Hill, graduating from the Plymouth Whitemarsh High School in 1962 where he was a member of the varsity football and wrestling teams. Later in life he had residences in Florida, North Carolina and California prior to returning to the Philadelphia area in the mid-1990s.
Stewart often reminisced fondly of the time spent in Oxford Maryland with his Aunt Virginia and family. He spent summers there growing up and later in life would make time to visit at least annually. He so enjoyed the crabcakes at the Robert Morris Inn.
Stewart is a proud Marine and served our country from 1963 – 1967 rising to the rank of Sergeant. He was one of the first Marines to land in DaNang, Vietnam in 1965. He remained active in the veteran’s community and would always make time to honor former and current veterans at many local ceremonies.
Stewart became visually impaired at the age of 47 however adjusted to day-to-day activities and remained independent. Utilizing various technology, he went on to spend years in various jobs assisting and training others with visual impairment how to live an active and fulfilling life. Over the years he touched so many lives always making time for others.
Stewart will be remembered as a true gentleman who deeply cared for his family and friends. He will be forever missed by all who knew him
