Obituary of Austin O. Scherer Jr.
Austin O. Scherer, Jr. age 83 of Plymouth Meeting passed away on January 2, 2024 at Chestnut Hill Hospital after suffering complications due to Covid.
Born March 9, 1940 in Jersey City, NJ, he was the oldest child of Dorothy (Ropke) and Austin O. Scherer. He grew up in Perkasie, PA and graduated from Penn Ridge High School in 1958. He joined the army after graduation and served most of his three years in Germany as a dental assistant.
Austin worked for Merck for 41 years, starting as a janitor and working his way up through many positions until Merck sent him to school to train to become an HVAC technician.
Austin was a skilled woodworker and enjoyed building things and working with his hands. He also enjoyed traveling and watching sports (especially cheering for the Eagles). He was quick witted and had a beautiful, loving, clever spirit.
Austin was a devoted husband and father and he enjoyed talking to and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife Helen (Elsasser) of 56 years, his 3 daughters: Helen Snay (Stephen), Pat Scherer, and Kathy Englert (Shawn) and 4 grandchildren: Jax Snay, Katryna Englert, Nick Snay, and Harrison Englert. He is also survived by his sister Judy Smolenski, brother Bob Scherer, and nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at 10am at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 3025 Church Road, Lafayette Hill. A service will be held at 11am following the viewing. The interment will be held at a later date at Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.
