Obituary of John E. Barrett
John Edward Barrett, 89, of Roslyn, PA, passed away on January 25, 2024. He was born on July 6, 1934, in Philadelphia, PA. John was a quiet and gentle man, known for his sharp dressing, strong work ethic and dedication to his family.
John is survived by his children: John J. (Cheryl) Barrett, Kevin (Carolann) Barrett, Joseph (Cindy) Barrett, Catherine Barrett, Margaret (the late Richard Jr.) Whitney and Mary Anne (Thomas) Cole. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. John is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Anne Barrett whom he so lovingly adored, and his parents, John and Mary Barrett. He is also survived by his sister, Geraldine (the late Alan) Prendergast
John attended Saint Bernards Primary School and North Catholic High School and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. He furthered his education through the Philadelphia Union Carpenters Apprenticeship School.
John proudly served in the Marines for 4 years. His military associations played an important role in shaping his character and values.
John was a Union Carpenter in Locals 1856 and 158. He worked for various companies including Frank D'Lauro and Company, Somers Construction, Keating Construction, E. Clifford Durell and Barclay White, Inc.
John was a devout Catholic and worshiped at Saint John of the Cross in Roslyn and Queen of Peace in Ardsley. When he was no longer able to attend mass, he enjoyed watching Father Jack Sheaffer on YouTube. His faith was an integral part of his life.
In his free time, John enjoyed watching Notre Dame Football and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He also found joy in working on his home in Roslyn and gardening.
John's family will receive friends on Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 9 AM until his Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM at Queen of Peace Catholic Church 820 North Hills Avenue, Ardsley, PA. His interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery 3301 W. Cheltenham Avenue, Philadelphia, PA.
