Obituary of L . LeRoy Hepburn Jr.
Please share a memory of L . LeRoy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sadly to say, Louis LeRoy Hepburn, Jr. passed away July 19, 2013 at the age of 85 at the Peter Becker Community nursing home in Harleysville, PA.
Roy, as he was known by friends and family, was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1928, the youngest of the four children of Lillian Adler Hepburn and Louis LeRoy Hepburn, Sr. who is a descendant of Commodore Barry the "Father of the American Navy".
Roy attended the William Penn Charter school, where he gained many lifelong friends. He graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and then served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. Subsequently he worked as an engineer at Selas Corporation, and later at Clifford B. Ives. He lived out his adult life in his house in Cedars, PA, where he loved working outside to turn his rural farmhouse into a country estate, and he very much enjoyed frequently entertaining his friends and family. He was a widower twice: his first wife was Anne Stevenson Clarke and his second wife was Margaret Stockbower.
He is survived by a large family of 6 children, 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren along with other close loved ones and longtime friends. He will be so missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting a charitable donation: two of Roy's favorites were the American Heart Association ( donate.americanheart.org/?) and the Cornell University crew in Ithaca NY ( www.giving.cornell.edu/give/). Roy was a strong competitor in crew, both at William Penn Charter (culminating in winning the esteemed Stotesbury Cup on the Schuylkill River), and at Cornell, highlighted by a win at the Washington Lake Regatta, Seattle WA.
A memorial service will be held August 10, 2013 at 11 am at the Peter Becker Community Chapel, 800 Maple Avenue, Harleysville PA.
