Louis "Lou" Charles Marino, 75, of Hatfield, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, surrounded by his family.
Lou is survived by his wife Barbara J. (Homan) of 28 years. He is also survived by his six children Michael Marino (Margaret), Robert Marino (Carrie), Clare Marino, Jodie Miller, Jeff Miller (Leni), and Justin Miller (Monika). Lou was a devoted and loving husband, father, and PopPop who is adored by his ten grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Rosemary Mangano (Mike) and by many nieces and nephews.
Lou was born February 18, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Michael and Josephine (DePasquale) Marino. He graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School in 1959 and later earned a bachelor's degree from St. Joseph's University as well as a masters degree from Villanova University.
Lou was a teacher and guidance counselor at the Widener Memorial School of Philadelphia for over 50 years. At Widener, he taught students of various physical and medical disabilities, and coached their basketball team. In 1987 he was honored as Philadelphia's Teacher of the Year.
He dedicated many years to coaching Towamencin Youth baseball and basketball teams. He was an avid sports fan and was known to be a true Philly fanatic.
He and longtime friend, Dick Smith, started and served as Boy Scout Leaders for Troop 191. They coordinated annual summer camping trips for more than forty years to the Hart Scout Reservation at a location that has since been dedicated as the Dick Smith Camp Site. Lou was a devoted teacher, coach, counselor, scout leader, and friend.
Visitation hours will be held Monday May 1, 2017, from 6 to 8 pm at Lownes Funeral Home, 659 Germantown Pike, Lafayette Hill 19444; and Tuesday May 2, 2017, from 9:30 to 10:30 am at St. Philip Neri Church, 437 Ridge Pike, Lafayette Hill, PA 19444.
A mass will be held at 10:30 am on May 2, 2017, at St. Philip Neri Church, 437 Ridge Pike, Lafayette Hill PA 19444.
Burial will be in the George Washington Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Widener Memorial School Troop 191, 1450 W. Olney Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19141. Funds will help defray the cost to send students with disabilities to Hart Scout Reservation.
